I listened to Harrys mysic on my small portable radio in my CHP Patrol car for years. I liced his music and was saddened when i heard Of his tragic death on the freeway in New York in 1981. He was such a great person and i was driving todays and heard Cats in a Craddle. It brings tears to my eyes each and everytine i hear Harrys music. I will be purchasing itens from his foundation and i just wanted to bless Harry and his family. You are mussed greatly. MiKe Becze. Retired CHP officer. God Bless you…
I lived in Fort Worth, Texas, in the late 70s. My husband and i attended our first Harry Chapin concert in Arlington, Texas (1977?). WE had front-row seats! so When Harry told the audience he was taking a short break, my husband gave harry a rainbow afghan i’d made for harry before he left for a break. AFTER Harry returned to the stage from the break, he sat on the edge of the stage and sanG mail order annie TO ME. Two days after the concert, my husband, nine-year-old daughter, and I went to a radio station in dallas where harry was conducting a 24-hour hungerthon. we were able to meet him at the radio station. When harry came into the lobby and saw me, he was surprised and said “I remember you. You’re the one who gave me the afghan. I called sandy and told her about it, and we’re going to put it on our bed.” he was so kind and gracious, even bending down on one knee so he could talk to my daughter at her level. The radio station’s photographer was present, who took a picture of that, which hangs in the entryway to our home. My daughter is now in her early 50s, but she still treasures her picture with harry. the legacy 35 wall art also hangs in the entryway.
All of this was prompted by knowing it’s harry’s birthday. And I wonder, “would Sandy be willing to send me the rainbow afghan?” I would gladly make an additional donation to the long island cares/the harry chapin food bank. My monthly donation was taken out of my federal paycheck for years until I retired, and since then I’ve been sending my monthly donation directly to LIC/HCFB. The afghan would be precious to me. could someone ask sandy if she would be willing to let me buy it? Please let me know.
An explanation: I had my name legally changed to chapin after my husband and I divorced in OCTOBER 1981. I didn’t want to keep his name and I wanted a name I could be proud of.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY HARRY!
Lost but never forgotten not by me
